This was supposed to be the closing speech at the Tax Day Tea Party

Since other speakers ran a bit long, we decided to have mercy on the tired crowd. Still, please give it a read. Julia Hayden wrote me one heck of a speech!

 That country, which I and many of you have served, and which all of us love so dearly!  When you perform those steps, you are telling the complacent enablers in the government “I want my country back.”  When you perform those steps, you are telling those who go along to get along “I want my country back.”  When you perform those steps, you are sending a message to those who have been too worried about what’s said at their dinner parties—let them worry about Tea Parties! Tell them: “I want my country back.”  Tell them!

Who among us is without sin?  Certainly none of us, in our personal lives. None!  But, even many of the “best” in Washington appear to turn a blind eye towards corruption, corruption of their fellows – and this among those whom we have trusted to faithfully administer to the needs of our nation! This careless irresponsibility, toleration of corruption and just plain bad faith would be unacceptable if practiced by any of us – and yet in Washington it seems to be business as usual.  It thrives–because they all let it!  Do you want to hear a bad joke, in a single phrase?  “The House Ethics Committee.”  (pause for laughter). House Ethics Committee… or an even funnier one – Senate Ethics Committee… Talk about a contradiction in terms!  Major scandals appear in the headlines, and yet somehow those responsible continue in office – untouched and unscathed, because powerful people – our permanently revolving aristocracy of elected politicians – are involved. And so the scandal dies down and is forgotten – until the next time. And our representatives tolerated this enduring situation … we tolerated this enduring situation … until now. A line was reached, in the last few weeks and months, a line which has now been crossed. And so we have come here tonight, to draw another line.

We all agree that we don’t want them to continue putting our children and our grandchildren ever further into debt.

I don’t care if you vote for a ‘D’ an ‘R’ an ‘L’ or a whatever.  I care that those we elect serve the country and serve the people … serve the people as I served, according to the oath I took when I entered military service. Yes or no–Will you commit, right now and before your fellow citizens, to perform those steps on the program? Will you?  I can’t hear you….

Yes or no–Will you commit to voting ONLY for those who will serve the county and the people, and have the courage and vision to make tough decisions?  Who will chose the difficult but necessary, over the easy but ultimately wrong? Will you?  I can’t hear you….

Yes or no–Will you commit to voting ONLY for those who fight–and I mean FIGHT–against the time-servers and self-made aristocrats who now sit in the seats of power?  Will you?  I can’t hear you….

Yes or no–Will you commit to getting involved in your party’s primaries, to ensure they select the best of us, not the worst and most corrupt?  Will you?  I can’t hear you….

Yes or no–Will you commit to STAYING involved, to keep writing and keep coming to Tea Parties and keep going to the long and boring candidate selection meetings your party uses to select who they will run?  Will you?  Will you?  I can’t hear you….

OK, now I hear you! Let’s hope those who are supposed to serve you in Washington get the message. But remember—this is but the first battle. We must keep the pressure on and never give up! What an HONNNORRR! To join THE TENS OF THOUSANDS of citizens who have come out today to TELL THE GOVERNMENT! E N O U G H!!!! STOP TAKING OUR MONEY! OUR KID’S WAGES ARE NOT THE GOVERNMENT’S CREDIT CARD!!! MAKE NO MISTAKE!! The VILE feeling in our GUT is telling us that there is Something TERRIBLE HAPPENING TO OUR COUNTRY! OUR WAY OF LIFE, OUR REPUBLIC Is under the GREATEST ATTACK since THE CIVIL WAR!

My Name is Katharine Moreno
I’m a single mother and a RESIDENT OF SAN ANTONIO. Today I get to share with you MY AMERICAN STORY!   I was born in Colombia, where if you are BORN POOR YOU DIE POOR! Where opportunity and prosperity is only FOR A FEW And individual’s RIGHTS ARE NON EXISTANT.

When my mother was a young woman she heard of this great country Called THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! Like MILLIONS of others, my mother DREAMED of reaching THIS COUNTRY. In 1968 HER DREAM came true CHANGING MY LIVE FOREVER! In this country I have worked hard and built a good life for my daughter and I’ll never forget the many times my mother would talked about.

ALL the MIRACLES God PROVIDED for her to come here EVERY DAY I thank God and my mother because they made it possible for me to live In the ONLY place where the CITIZEN is above government In this country, ANY ONE can reach their dreams – however high they are. My American Story is, like millions of other American Stories, that we are blessed to be citizens IN THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD I stand here tonight representing all the immigrants who LOVVVVE OUR COUNTRY!

We CAN NOT take for granted the privilege of being UNITED STATE CITIZENS Have no doubt, my mother, your parents, and grand parents sacrificed to reach THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY AND PROSPERITY. NO ONE! Leaves their family, and friends to come here to receive government HAND-OUTS. REGRETTABLY – hand-outs is EXACLY what the SOCIALIST movement is pushing They want to convince us that HAND-OUTS are better than PROSPERITY.

The ALARMING thing is that so many of us are buying into this lie that government is our way out Of the hole, but that’s IMPOSSIBLE, because THEY created the HOLE.  Our American dream is being replaced by a BIGGGG GOVERNMENT that continues to shove DOWN our throats MORE AND MORE TAXES.

Somewhere along the way our civil servants forgot THEY WORK FOR US and WE don’t want HAND-OUTS – WE WANT OPPORTUNITY HAND-OUTS whether given at a street corner or a government office are DEMORALIZING, We know that the NAUSEATING feeling in our gut
Is the WARNING mechanism of our common sense AND WE CAN NOT IGNORE IT.  It is telling us that there is a DELIBERATE attack against OUR WAY OF LIFE

If WE embrace government as the answer WE have lost sight of our VALUE AND ABILITY and WE ENABLE Government to dictate our life. HAND-OUTS ARE UN AMERICAN   This attack is pushed by a media that MISUSES its power to vilify those whoLOVE GOD AND COUNTRY The very media who is MOCKING US for coming out tonight  An attack by universities that graduate DROVES of students who believe in SOCIALIST VALUES Taught by LIBERAL professors who are PAID by the government and GLORIFIED by the media.

THE ATTACK, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IS AGAINST EACH AND EVERYONE OF US WHO BELIEVE IN THE CONSTITUION THE BAD NEWS IS That it is our fault that today we face A LESS prosperous future.  We have taken for granted a constitution that EMPOWER US against tyranny.  We have assumed that our way of life is GUARANTEED.  We have been naïve and trusted an ARROGANT and SELF SERVIANT GOVERNMENT   THE BAD NEWS IS THAT ONE DAY WE ARE GOING TO WAKE UP SOCIALIST FRANCE.  WE ARE AMERICANS! AND THAT IS THE GREAT NEWS! Yes! WE are Americans, a people connected not by Race or Nationality,

BUT CONNECTED BY THE MOST ENDURING SPIRIT. WE are SMARTER than government. We KNOW that our rights come from God NOT A ORRUPT government THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT As we sat FRUSTRATED in our living rooms watching the destruction of our nation. A man – YES! Our 21st century Thomas Paine whispered to our hearts…. “WE ARE NOT ALONE” AND “WE SURROUND THEM”

And tonight thousands of us came to say in a LOUD and UNIFIIED VOICE “Mr. President, Madam Speaker, and all of you who want DESTROY our country LISTEN TO US! Today we proclaim FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA YES! WE SURROUND! AND WE WILL TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK! TONIGHT WE ARE HERE Ready to DEFEND our NATION! We are ready for a battle not of GUNS AND BLOOD,   But a battle of REASON AND RIGHTS! FOR LIFE, LIBERY AND THE PURSUTE OF HAPPINESS.

Let’s PLEDGE tonight To point OURSELVES and OUR NATION back to GOD! We know that by the PROVIDENCE of God our nation was created If we don’t want God in our Nation, He will leave our country Let’s commit OURSELVES and DEMAND from GOVERNMENT To practice the HONORABLE PRINCIPALS AND VALUES   Needed to put OUR COUNTRY BACK ON TRACK

In this we WILL HONOR GOD and God WILL honor OUR NATION AGAIN. Let’s stand TOGETHER and be PROUD to be AMERICANS.  Let’s stop APOLOGIZING to the WORLD because WE ARE BLESSED A SOCIETY! And in the words of Thomas Paine “Society in every state is a blessing, But government, even in its best stage, Is but a necessary evil; And in its worst state is an intolerable One”

Hello all you chattering class right-wing extremists! Well, that’s what some in Senate and the Department of Homeland Security call you, anyway. I’d prefer to think of us as freedom and liberty-loving American patriots.

Anyway, I’m Joni Schmidt, and I’d like to welcome you to the Boerne edition of the Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party! I’m just like you – I don’t want to have to do this; I’ve never protested in my life before the 1st Tea Party on February 27 in San Antonio. I’d rather be home, spending quality time with my hubby, taking care of my animals, tending my garden, even cleaning the house! But this Tea Party isn’t about me or what I want to do – it’s about the very survival of our nation.

To be fair, my discontent didn’t start with this administration…I called and wrote my Congressmen lots of times during the spending free-for-all government of the last president, too. But it doesn’t seem like calling and writing do any good anymore. It seems they need to hear from us in a different manner. So we’re here today because we’re dissatisfied (to put it very mildly) with the direction Congress is now taking our country. We’re dissatisfied with the so-called stimulus bill, mortgage bailout bill, the Omnibus bill, and all of the huge budget deficit spending Congress has passed, we’re dissatisfied with the rapid descent into socialism, and we’re dissatisfied with their proposed tax increases on the wealth- and job-producers in our nation. And Stimulus II is just around the corner. Tell me – how many normal families continue to spend money they don’t have when they find that they have more month than money?

Hey, I have an interesting statistic for you: did you know that as of yesterday, all the money you earn for the rest of the year is yours? April 14 was tax-freedom day. And I heard on a talk show yesterday (either Rush or Hannity, can’t remember which), that next year – with the new proposed tax plan – we’ll have to work 45 days more each year for the government. Go home and figure your daily earnings, multiply them by 45, and see how much more deeply Uncle Sam will have his hands in your pocket pretty soon. Makes you sick to your stomach, right??? Let’s see if we can do something to head this off at the pass by showing Congress we’re ready to hold them accountable and vote them out of their cushy jobs if they keep failing us.

If you haven’t seen it already, there’s a poster up here with each state’s tax freedom day on it. Although Texas is better off than most states, do you still feel as though you‘re taxed to death? I mean, I don’t mind paying taxes…as long as my tax dollars go to defend this nation from enemies – that’s the only true function of the federal government, you know. Too often, our tax dollars are just spent frivolously. For example, how many of you agree with awarding ACORN and other “community organizing groups” several billion dollars out of the stimulus package that was passed in February? How many of you agree with giving Hamas $900,000,000? They’re an avowed enemy of our loyal Middle Eastern ally! How many of you agree with giving $20,000,000 to resettle people from the Gaza strip right here in America? Oh, you didn’t know about that? On Jan 27, the President signed an executive order entitled “Unexpected Urgent Refugee and Migration Needs Related to Gaza.” Will those people be our friends? Only time will tell. There are so many ways our tax dollars are being taken for granted by our non-representing representatives, nothing surprises us anymore. They actually think WE OWE THEM, that the money they confiscate from us is their money, and that we actually even owe them more…it’s time to change the way they think!

The good thing is, people from all sides of the political spectrum are waking up to the increasing government intrusion into our lives . Look around you. Would you ever have expected to be a “protestor?” Did you previously feel as though you were all alone? Today, all over the nation, we’re proving that all along we really were the silent majority. And for future tea parties, I would wager the attendance will just grow and grow. The Tea Party I threw together in just 3 days on February 27 in front of the Alamo brought only 35 attendees. I had no idea how to even go about organizing anything like that! I was expecting 15, so 35 was an astounding success. I vowed that, to count the next tea party a success, somewhere around 100 people would participate. I’m happy to say, thanks to your determination to preserve our Republican form of government, this Tea Party is already a success in my book!

Before we get started, I’d like to thank a few people. First, there’s Suzy Bettac – without whom this program would not be nearly as interesting. I’ve never worked with someone as gung-ho as Suzy: someone who knows what they’re after, and actually goes out and gets it done right the first time. And the numerous volunteers who have stepped up to get the sound system, photography, videography, citizen reporters, man the sign-up table, bring water and sand. You’re the best! And I appreciate you more than you know.

Now, we have a great program prepared for you, and my new goal tonight is for you to have had a rewarding, fun evening gathered with like-minded folks. So I’m going to turn the mike over to Pastor Garfield Green for the invocation – and let’s get started!

Did you have a good time? Do you now have a stronger desire to restore the nation our Founders intended us to have? I do. I am so thankful that I am allowed to be a part of this movement. It’s very obvious that God has his hand in this, and I thank and praise Him.

Before we all go home, please bear with me a couple more minutes as I tell you a story.

I’m just going to read the last few paragraphs of this historical perspective. When I read the complete story, my respect, admiration, and thanks for our Founding Fathers could not have been greater. These were indeed men of honor, in every sense of the word.

Of those 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, in each case with brutal treatment. Several lost wives, sons or entire families. One lost his 13 children. Two wives were brutally treated. All were at one time or another the victims of manhunts and driven from their homes.

Twelve signers had their homes completely burned.

Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one defected or went back on his pledged word. Their honor and the nation they sacrificed so much to create is still intact.

And, finally, there is the New Jersey Signer, Abraham Clark.

He gave two sons to the officer corps in the Revolutionary Army. They were captured and sent to that infamous British prison hulk afloat in New York Harbor known as the hell ship “Jersey,” where 11,000 American captives were to die. The younger Clarks were treated with a special brutality because of their father.

One was put in solitary and given no food. With the end almost in sight with the war almost won, no one could have blamed Abraham Clark for acceding to the British request when they offered him his sons’ lives if he would recant and come out for the King and Parliament. The utter despair in this man’s heart, the anguish in his very soul, must reach out to each and one of us down through 230 years with the answer: “No.”

The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence proved by their every deed that they made no idle boast when they composed the most magnificent curtain line in history. “And for the support of this Declaration with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

Do you know anyone like that? Have you ever met anyone with that kind of resolve for something they would possibly not live to see the results of, but were still willing to give EVERYTHING they have for the cause of Liberty? Are you a person like that?

Now, fast forward to the Battle of the Alamo. All 189 of those brave men knew they would most likely not survive the battle against the 3000 Mexican soldiers. Yet, as legend has it, on the morning of March 5, 1836, Col. William Barrett Travis, a 26-year old lawyer, called his fellow defenders together and told them:

“We must die,” he said. “Our business is not to make a fruitless effort to save our lives, but to choose the manner of our death.”

He saw three possibilities: Surrender and summary execution, trying to fight their way out only to be “butchered” by Mexican lancers or “remain in this fort…resist every assault, and to sell our lives as dearly as possible.”

Then, with a flourish, Travis drew his sword and slowly marked a line in the dirt. “I now want every man who is determined to stay here and die with me to come across this line.”

Young Tapley Holland made his decision quickly, proclaiming “I am ready to die for my country!” as he jumped over the line. It’s hard to picture it as a stampede – the men knew they were voting to die – but all but two of them walked over the line. Co-commander Jim Bowie, lying sick on a cot, asked some of his men to carry him across. Only Louis Moses Rose, a French soldier of fortune, remained behind.

That night, Rose slipped out of the Alamo and managed to make it through the enemy lines. He ended up in Louisiana and supposedly lived until 1850.

How much do you love your country? Hopefully, it won’t come to that: being called to make the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, but many, many brave men and women have chosen to do just that. I would like the members of the mighty United States Military Forces, both past and present, to stand up and be recognized. God bless our Military! Thank you so much for your service to our country.

Now, I’m going to draw a line in the sand here, and if you resolve to do everything you can to pass a healthy, strong, free nation on to your children and grandchildren, I invite you to cross this line.
